Who We Are:
Ben and Geoff have been friends in fatherhood, teaching, and love of wilderness for two decades. Ben, father of seven, is a long-time teacher at the Sequoyah School. He has helped lead Sequoyah’s wilderness education, camping, field games, and PE programs for decades, introducing hundreds of young people to hiking, camping, and land stewardship. Geoff, father of three, is a cofounder and teacher at Village Playgarden, Altadena’s forest and farm-based Waldorf early childhood school located on 2 acres of land at the base of the San Gabriel foothills where he spends his days creating community with children and their parents, taking care of farm animals, growing food, hiking in the foothills, and building things.
Malcolm, Simone, and Aquila have been beloved camp counselors at Mountainside for many summers and have also worked as teachers at Village Playgarden. All three also attended Mountainside when they were younger. Simone is currently a student at Spelman College in Atlanta after attending language school in Havana, Cuba for a gap year. She backpacked in the Colorado Rockies through Deer Hill Expeditions. Malcolm, an experienced camper, recently graduated from Occidental College and spent a gap year in Nicaragua and has taught at Summer Kids Summer Camp in Altadena. Aquila loves downhill bike racing and recently completed a 100 mile, 5-day hike through the snowy mountains of Los Padres National Forest with a group of students and faculty at Midland School.
